Sketchbook Making

Come and learn how to create simple, inspirational and customised sketchbooks. Using pamphlet, concertina and stab-stitch techniques participants will make a variety of books. All aspects of making the sketchbook will be explored from preparing paper for covers and pages to how to use basic bookmaking tools. All techniques will be easy to replicate when you next need a new sketchbook! Participants should bring a variety of paper eg; cartridge, watercolour, newspaper, magazine, brown, wrapping, tracing etc. and cutting boards, craft knives and scissors if available. All tools, board, thread, glue and paint and encouragement will be provided!

How to Fill a Sketchbook

There’s no right or wrong way to keep a sketchbook the most important thing is to keep one! This one day workshop will explore several methods that artists use to record ideas and images. Participants will be encouraged to get creative by experimenting with text, images, collage and a variety of drawing and painting media. We will look at using different sizes of sketchbooks and this will help everyone find what works best for them in expressing their particular interests. Participants should bring a variety of pre-used paper eg; newspaper, magazine, brown, wrapping, tracing, envelopes, old books etc., plus a cutting board, ruler, craft knife, scissors and any drawing and painting materials available.

mixed media

Have a great day making mixed media works of art! This workshop utilises a variety of techniques including mono-printing on a variety of papers, collaging with images and printed paper, adding texture and stencilling. Adding a variety of paint and drawing media will allow everyone to make highly individual pieces of work. Participant’s should bring a variety of papers, cartridge, newspaper, magazines, old photos, envelopes etc., all drawing and painting media available plus a cutting board, ruler, craft knife, glue and scissors.

outdoor drawing

Come and spend some time drawing outdoors in the very varied surroundings of The Water of Leith! This location offers a rich urban, post industrial and natural environ from which to choose subject matters for drawing. Participants will explore perspective, scale, subject matter and how to make drawings that can be used for further development at a later date. Participants should bring an outdoor stool/ chair, sketchbook/drawing board, variety of paper, clips for holding work to board, preferred drawing and painting media. Please remember that you have to be able to carry your equipment but travelling distance will be limited.

Material lists will be provided and some tools, equipment & materials being available in the studio. All events run from 10am - 3pm and have small class sizes with all levels being welcome. Refreshments will be available but a packed lunch must be provided by participants.

Rosemary Taylor is an Edinburgh based artist and educator. Since graduating with a BA(hons) in Fine Art she has continued to develop her artistic practice, regularly exhibiting work and been the recipient of national and international awards. A highly regarded art teacher she spent many years teaching in public and private settings. Her interest in using a wide variety of media to express her interests has given her a love of teaching drawing, painting and mixed media. She recently graduated with distinction in her Master Degree in Contemporary Fine Art Practice from Duncan of Jordanstone.

About studio 48

Studio 48 is located on Newhaven Road in Edinburgh. All classes are taught by qualified artists at a working studio. Our passion is encouraging artists in a supportive and friendly environment. Studio 48 has been running classes for 8 years, we teach young and old, beginners to aspiring art college graduates, an art education is possible for all types of people. All artists are members of the Scottish Artist Union, PVG disclosed and Public Liability Insured. Classes are small which allows for a more personal and individual level of learning.
